General Pediatric Oncology Fellowship

DESCRIPTION

Post-residency training in General Pediatric Oncology

Duration: Program duration is 28 months inclusive of vacation time (3 weeks per year in the first two years).

Location: Based at CCHE Cairo, Egypt with a rotation to DFBC in Boston MA, USA.  Other affiliated hospitals or institutions in the USA may also participate in the program.

Program Content Model: Course content is set using the American Academy of Pediatric Oncology curriculum guidelines.

Fellows should meet a 90% eligible attendance requirement in the following:

  • Weekly Lectures
  • Study team meetings CCHE
  • Combined clinics CCHE
  • Mortality and morbidity rounds CCHE
  • Visiting lecturers
  • Monthly video conferencing of difficult cases at both institutions
  • DFBC tumor board and other appropriate joint tutorial sessions
  • Assignments

Year 1 (clinical, diagnostic imaging and laboratory) (4 weeks orientation)

  1. Hospital orientation: fellowship policy and procedures, history of CCHE and the Academy, expectation of the fellowship program, CPR/PALS certification, Hospital Information System HIS (Cerner System)
  2. Overview of oncology and cell biology
  3. Pediatric oncology including epidemiology, management (surgical, radiation therapy) and drug treatment
  4. Pediatric cancer history, physical exam and work-up including imaging
  5. Basics of chemotherapy (including alternative and complimentary care), pharmaceutical care
  6. Evidence based medicine and clinical trials
  7. Transfusion medicine and blood bank
  8. Infectious diseases, fever and neutropenia management, infection control
  9. Oncology emergencies
  10. Supportive care (antiemetics, analgesics, growth factors, nutrition support, pain management)
  11. Palliative care, psychosocial orientation

Rotations:

  1. Malignant Hematology including Hemato Pathology (10 weeks- 5 weeks block x2)
  2. Solid tumors including surgical pathology (10 weeks- 5 weeks block x2)
  3. Diagnostic Imaging-Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (3 weeks)
  4. Neuro – Oncology (5 weeks)
  5. Psychosocial Oncology, palliative care and pain management, spiritual care (3 weeks)
  6. Radiation Oncology (2 weeks)
  7. Bone marrow transplantation and stem cell lab (3 weeks)
  8. Vacation (3 weeks)
  9. Emergency Room (2 weeks)

Year 2 (Clinical, research)

  1. Research methodology and selection of research project (3 weeks)
  2. Malignant Hematology including Hemato Pathology (10 weeks- 5 weeks block x2)
  3. Bone marrow transplantation and stem cell lab (4 weeks)
  4. Intensive Care (4 weeks]
  5. Solid tumors including surgical pathology (10 weeks- 5 weeks block x2)
  6. Neuro-oncology (6 weeks)
  7. Emergency Room (4 weeks – 2 weeks block x2)
  8. Vacation (3 weeks)
  9. DFBCH rotation (6 weeks + 1 week travel)
  10. Exams (1 week)

Year 3 (final 16 weeks)

  1. Healthcare management (6 weeks)
  2. Research work and completed paper (10 weeks)
